Hamarøyskaftet

south face

Hamarøyskaftet (613 m) resembles the steepest of the Aiguilles in Chamonix, aiming for the sky at the west coast of Hamarøy. Martin Ekroll, one of the pioneers of climbing in northern Norway did the first ascent back in 1885, zig-zagging up the south face. The climb looks steep and difficult from a distance, but is relative easy once you get closer, with less exposure than at Stetind and Reka. On a sunny day, you will be rewarded with fantastic views towards Lofoten in the west and Stetind in the east. The original name of Hamarøyskaftet referred to the male genitalia but official authorities renamed the mountain when the coast of Norway was mapped, since it was not suitable to write on a map.
