Reka

South ridge

Reka (605m) is a peculiar peak located in Vesterålen, close to Sortland. It resembles a shovel (Reke) and is one of the steeper and more difficult mountains in Norway to summit. TG Ouston & HS Mundahl made the first ascent in 1902. They climbed a variation of today’s normal route which ascents the south ridge in four rope lengths. The difficulties are graded 4+/4b and offers airy climbing on exceptional rock. An old guidebook describes Reka in this way: “The shape of this mountain is something between a pyramid and an obelisk. Its outlines are so regular, and its sides so smooth and even, that one is almost led to suppose that in this instance nature has been assisted by art."
